Project Summary

Major jacket substructure for West of Shetland installation being fabricated/erected in Norway. The customer was experiencing discrepancies/difficulties with interpretation of ultrasonic inspection results during the jacket fabrication.  Repair levels were high and interpretation issues were starting to affect the fabrication programme

The Scope

Glacier was requested to appraise the site NDE operation and technician capability and to provide 3rd party assessment of disputed inspection results.

Outcome

Glacier provided PCN level 3 personnel to appraise the technician capability, review the inspection procedures and assess numerous disputed inspection results.  The exercise was undertaken over a four month period during the latter stages of the jacket fabrication.

Procedures were modified to provide a clearer basis for interpretation of ultrasonic inspection results, numerous false calls were identified which would have resulted in unnecessary rework, defect/repair rates dropped significantly.  All these factors contributed to a successful completion and sailaway within project programme window.

Glacier’s Level 3 trained technicians identified false calls & eradicated unnecessary work meaning delivery of project and sailaway within timeframe.

Project Summary

Major subsea storage tank fabrication project for UK waters being fabricated in Dubai, UAE.  The project was running seriously behind schedule with a significant NDE backlog and high levels of repairs/rework being major contributory factors.

The Scope

Glacier were requested to provide a team of experienced ultrasonic technicians to help alleviate the problems.

Outcome

Glacier provided a team of four technicians headed up by a PCN level 3 supervisor.  Glacier appraised the NDE procedures in use and determined that local technicians were applying over critical accept/reject criteria resulting in significant unnecessary repair/rework. Levels of repair/rework fell following the intervention of Glacier and the less stringent accept/reject criteria led to improved NDE production levels due to less time being spent on the critical assessment of acceptable weld flaws.

Expert inspection services resulted in increased production levels due to accurate assessment.
