Glacier Energy Services extends capability with move to major new premises

Glacier's three businesses - highly respected pipeline machining company Roberts, renowned welding services specialist Wellclad, and provider of specialist machining applications Site Machining Services - will each have a presence at the 23,000 sq ft unit at the £14 million Clyde Gateway East Business Park in Glasgow.

The new facility has been specifically designed and tailored to suit Glacier's needs, in the delivery of a wide range of services to the global energy sector, including precision on-site machining equipment, weld overlay technologies, and specialist pipe machining and preparation services.

Glacier has moved from its original Motherwell location to the site at Clyde Gateway East, which offers better transport connection in addition to greatly improved operational facilities. All staff transfer to the new premises with the business.

Dave Sturrock, chief executive of Glacier Energy Services, which employs 60 staff across its operations in the central belt, Aberdeen and Newcastle said: "Moving to extended premises at Clyde Gateway will allow us to capitalise on market opportunities and is a major component of our growth across the global oil and gas industry.

"It will provide us with greater capacity for investment in our key products and services going forward, ensuring we have the resources in place to meet demand and enhance delivery for our customers.

"In addition to our investment in facilities and equipment, we will continue to recruit staff across all areas of our business to support our growth plan."

Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said: "I congratulate Glacier Energy Services on the opening of their new offices. This highlights the opportunities that exist in Scotland as a whole and not just within the North East. Scotland has world leading skills in oil and gas, and Glacier is a great example of the innovation which goes into supplying the sector.

"The oil and gas sector is vitally important to Scotland's economy. With more than half of the value of the North Sea's oil and gas reserves yet to be extracted, up to 24 billion recoverable barrels with a potential wholesale value of £1.5 trillion, oil and gas will remain an enormous economic resource for decades to come.

"The Scottish Government's Oil and Gas Strategy, developed in conjunction with industry, lays out a plan to help the industry go from strength to strength, and rising capital investment - reaching £8.5bn in 2011 and expected to rise to £11.5bn in 2012 - demonstrates the confidence investors and the industry have in Scotland."

The move to new premises follows Glacier's acquisition of leading industrial specialist Site Machining Services (SMS) earlier in the year, extending its offering to the global oil and gas industry.

SMS will maintain its primary base at Newcastle, with its service to be opened up to clients through the group's Glasgow headquarters.

The company is backed by private equity providers Maven Capital Partners and the Simmons Parallel Energy Fund, and was represented by Colliers International, Glasgow when taking on its Clyde Gateway site.
