Mr Straughen has been an Executive Director of Wood Group since 2007, and is currently Chief Executive of Wood Group's Engineering Division, with additional responsibility for the groups safety and environmental activities.

Glacier provides support to operators and oilfield service companies in the global energy sector across its operational hubs in Aberdeen, Glasgow, Newcastle and Singapore.

Its Offshore division provides specialist services in support of inspection, repair and maintenance activities in the oil & gas market, specifically the provision of precision on-site portable equipment for pipe cutting, flange facing and pipe coating removal; onsite machining services; and heat exchanger, repair, refurbishment and replacement services.

Glacier's Engineering division specialises in providing weld overlay solutions as part of the manufacture of subsea production equipment.

Mr Straughen says: "Glacier Energy Services has successfully built a reputation for quality and service in a short space of time and has grown rapidly through its approach of acquiring companies with significant track record and experience in their fields, and then developing these businesses under its ownership.

"There is huge potential for all our companies to grow worldwide, and with the opening of the group's first overseas base in Singapore in 2013, we are well placed to capitalise on opportunities across South East Asia as well as in the home market, the UKCS North Sea."

Mr Straughen has had a long career in oil and gas, having worked on and offshore, both in the UK and overseas, and was with AMEC for 25 years prior to joining Wood Group, latterly as Group

Managing Director responsible for their Global Oil & Gas business, as well as all other UK activities.

Originally from the Scottish Borders, Mr Straughen holds a BSc (Hons) Degree in Mechanical Engineering.  He is a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Energy Institute. He was a member of PILOT, the UK Government Oil & Gas Advisory Board, from 2000 - 2007 and was Chairman of the Energy Industry Council from 2002 to 2007.

He was recently a member of the UK Government’s Offshore Wind Cost Reduction Task Force, and is a current member of the Scottish Government’s Energy Advisory Board.

Glacier Energy Services group chairman, Scott Martin, said: "Mike Straughen will be a major asset for Glacier – he is one of the UKCS' most recognisable business leaders and brings outstanding value to the board.

"In three years, we have moved from a standing start to a position of real strength, having acquired four recognisable and successful companies – Roberts, Wellclad, Site Machining Services and Ross Offshore.

"Bringing Mike on board is another major acquisition from our perspective, as we look to consolidate on our success and grow even further, with a particular focus adding further specialist capability to the group and to develop our offering in selective, strategic international markets where he has significant experience."

Glacier Energy Services is backed by private equity providers Maven Capital Partners and the Simmons Parallel Energy Fund.
